Summary

Hiromi Owada (JMA) presented a proposal for a template to homogenise the web pages showing the GSICS Bias Monitoring results for the IR channels of GEO imagers. While it was agreed to follow this style, the presentation stimulated a lot of useful discussion about the best method to implement the web pages. The prototype is based on selecting pre-produced static plots from a set of pull-down menus, allowing users to display time series of particular interest. It was agreed that in order to limit the number of plots required, GPRCs could be free to limit the range of selectable combinations. In this case, the bare minimum should be agreed between GPRCs.

It was generally felt that the best solution would be to generate the plots dynamically on request from the user of the web pages. This may be achieved in Javascript, or using a Java applet. Dave Doelling point out that this is done on the CERES webpages - and provided more information after the meeting (see below). The working assumption is that all GPRCs will host such a service for their products - either on their webpages or through an associated GSICS Data And Products Server. All GPRCs were encouraged to investigate the capabilities of their web servers in terms of these technologies. This information is needed by 20 March, in time for the meeting in Daejeon, where we intend to discuss the technical implementation of these web pages.

The same basic technology should apply to displaying other GSICS Bias Monitoring products - e.g. the reflected solar-band channels. In this case, the basic variable being displayed could be calibration gain [radiance/count] , or calibration bias relative to the nominal calibration [%], depending on the instrument in question. It was stressed that it must be clear which version of the monitored and reference datasets the products apply to.

Bob Iacovazzi (NOAA) introduced another important discussion on the associated web pages for Instrument Monitoring Logs. This activity is related to an action on the Exec Panel from CGMS to "define what should be the key factors that need to be displayed in the GSICS Instrument Monitoring web sites". Bob provided some suggestions for the possible scope of these factors - including time series of calibration coefficients, instrument noise and event logs. It was agreed that there is a clear need for ready access to this information - both with GSICS - and in the wider community. It was also agreed that, at a minimum, it should include time series of basic "no/no-go" status reports for each instrument, with the the capacity to include hyperlinks to documents providing more information on specific events. This will also be discussed in more details at the next GSICS meeting.

The draft agenda for the next GSICS meeting, in Daejeon, was also discussed.

Post-meeting Note

Email from Dave Doelling (NASA):
Here is the CERES web site:

http://ceres.larc.nasa.gov/order_data.php

click on browse and subset of the EBAF product on the right

click TOA flux and set SW or LW

it is set for regional plot

click plot data at the bottom

all these 2D plot are generated dynamically click on one of the plots and you can animate and change colorbar

go back to selection page and click global mean and you can see 10 years of monthly flux means

again you can click on a plot and change plotting preferences

Here is the CERES procedure

all plotted data comes from the archived netCDF CERES products the data is read from the netCDF files and plotted using Java, FLOT and Python.

The plots are kind of crude, but made to be quickly generated and allow the user to verify that is what he was looking for.

The nice thing about this tool it also writes out a netCDF file customized from the selections of the user, for only the parameters they want and not the whole official product. Of course all the metadata is the same.
