Summary

Ralph reviewed the old actions which were essentially for each of the topical area leads to self align and develop some paths forward. He also introduced a new member, Derek Houtz from NIST who is now the focal point since David Walker retired.

Reports from the topical leads included:
  • Methodologies - Jun and Rachel reported they had nothing new this time
  • Reference Standards - Manik gave an update regarding work done at NOAA to use the AMSU/CDR as an in orbit reference (see attached slides). Tim noted two concerns - first, if NWP fields being used as input in the RTM, there is likely MSU data embedded, so are there any issues with this? He also asked the monitored instruments that have overlapping channels with the AMSU/MSU FCDR. Manik pointed to slide 9 of his presentation. It discussed that small differences between the central frequency of monitored and reference instruments can be quantified and their impact on resulting biases can still be explained. Second, how timely could these updates be made - Manik and Cheng-Zhi noted that these could be done relatively quickly in the future. Currently the biases can be calculated at a lag of 1 month.
  • LUT/Corrections Tables - Viju mentioned nothing new to report
We spent time discussing plans for the upcoming Annual GRWG/GDWG meeting, March 20-24, Madison, WI USA. Ralph had a strawman list of topics which in general, the group felt would cover enough relevant areas for there to be a half-day parallel session at the meeting. Tim noted that it might make sense to conduct this in parallel with the UV sub group since this would cause the least conflicts among the agency participants. Ralph requested that everyone let them know whether they would be interested in participating either in person or remotely (see actions). The organizing committee meets on January 19 2017 to flesh out the agenda.

We had three interesting science talks (slides attached). Short summaries include:
  • Viju presented a summary of SSM/T2 intercalibration activities at EUMETSAT. The work is being lead by S. Kobayashi as part of Climate SAG and FIDUCEO projects. Main challenges are data recovery and lack of documentation. Preliminary results show scan biases and inconsistencies with RTM simulations. In essence, similar results are previously shown by the Luo team.
  • Johnny presented an update of SSM/T2 intercalibration with AMSU-B that is part of NOAA's CDR program. Work continues on trying to intercalibrate SSM/T2 with AMSU-B. Results indicate that AMSU-B is warmer by over 1 K for the 183 GHz bands. (Both Viju and Johnny have agreed to work more closely together in the future as there are many common threads to their work).
  • Cheng-Zhi gave an update on the MSU CDR work at NOAA, focusing on AMSU Channels 4-9 (Oxygen bands). Revisiting previous calibration work, the biases between satellite pairs are generally 0.2 K or less, although some sensors need special attention for certain time periods. N15 and N18 agree quite well offering the potential of using them as reference satellites.

Outcome and Actions

The main action was to prepare for the GRWG/GDWG annual meeting for participation by the MW subgroup at both the mini-workshop on the afternoon of 3/20 and then the parallel MW session later in the week. After this telecon, Ralph received interest in participation (R-Remote; P-In person) from Martin (R), Derek (R or P), Wes Berg (R or P), Cheng-Zhi (R), Karsten (R), Jun (R), Johnny (R), Viju (R or P), Tim (P), Manik (P), Misako (no JAXA due to end of fiscal year business but willing to have JMA present on their behalf). Ralph will be in touch with participants once the agenda is developed.
