GSICS Microwave Subgroup Meeting (July 13, 2021)

Agenda:

1100-1400 (UTC), 0700-1000 (U.S. Eastern Daylight Time), 1200-1500 (Central Europe Standard Time), 1900-2200 (China Standard Time), 2000-2300 (Korea and Japan Standard Time)

1. Comparison of COSMIC-2 Radio Occultation Retrieval Products with Vaisala RS41 and RS92 Radiosonde Water Vapor and Upper-air Temperature Measurements (Xi Xiao – NOAA)

In this study, the temperature and humidity data independently retrieved by UCAR and NOAA/STAR from COSMIC-2 RO data are compared with in-situ Vaisala RS41 and RS92 RAOB data. Collocated 7-month of COSMIC-2 RO and RS41/RS92 RAOB data are analyzed to investigate the height and day-night dependence of temperature and humidity biases. The RO vs. RAOB comparison helps quantify the temperature and humidity biases among different radiosonde sensor types and different RO retrieval algorithms.

2. Augmenting Long-term Operational Microwave Radiometer Data Quality Assessment Robustness with COSMIC-2 Atmospheric Soundings (Robbie Iacovazzi – NOAA)

The GNSS RO atmospheric and moisture soundings are critical to supporting NOAA operational satellite microwave sounder data quality assessments. The monitoring method that utilizes the GNSS RO sounding has been update in the past year or so to include: Increased number of radiometer channels; Improved screening; Sounding gap filling; and Addition of COSMIC-2 data. COSMIC-2 soundings have proven to be a stable sounding source that NOAA can use to continue its microwave sounder monitoring activities

3. GSICS Spectral Response Function (SRF) Format (Robbie Iacovazzi and Mark Liu)

The group discussed GSICS SRF format, and the newly released JPSS-2 ATMS SRFs.

4. Microwave Subgroup Workshop (Mark Liu)

The October 2021 workshop was announced to the subgroup, and feedback regarding the workshop was solicited.
