Minutes:

Action Items

1. Define GSICS product: Hugh Evans not present. Discussion deferred to next meeting.

2. Method of archival intercalibration: Proposed by ESA last meeting. Discussed later in this meeting.

3. Data levels: Have ESA, NOAA, CMA definitions. Based on this information, L2 may be the correct common level for cross-calibration. Waiting for information from other agencies.

4. Compare methods to PRBEM. Ongoing. Each organization may review info provided by ESA last meeting and provide feedback at next annual meeting.

5. Darmstadt meeting: Names to invite: Discussed later in this meeting.

6. Darmstadt meeting: Agenda: Discussed later in this meeting.

7. Decision point on intercal method: current proposal is to use PRBEM Data Analysis Procedure for intercalibration. If so, use common code base via gitlab. (Need clarification of github vs. gitlab) No discussion at this time.

Plan of Next GSICS Annual Meeting

http://gsics.atmos.umd.edu/bin/view/Development/AnnualMeeting2024

Darmstadt 11-15 March 2024. Hybrid. SW session March 12 1230-1600 UTC

Hewison: how many people attending in person? how is the time slot?

In person: Nagatsuma, Sandberg, Andries perhaps, ESA perhaps, Kholodkov perhaps

Remote: some Japanese colleagues, NOAA Boulder, CMA, KMA

Register online – there will be a link on the page

http://gsics.atmos.umd.edu/bin/view/Development/AnnualMeeting2024

Clearly do not need a large room but do need a room with telecon capability. Will use Teams.

In-person attendees to check for visa requirements.

Agenda of Space Weather Session in GSICS Annual Meeting

Ingmar Sandberg on standard method of cross-calibration

NICT presenter on Arase calibration

Who can speak on gitlab? Ingmar: Piers Jiggens proposed use PRBEM repository. Ingmar does not have direct experience, but he could get feedback from his SPARC team and present ~3 charts on this.

Topic “Method of calibrating SW Instruments” includes both ground and on-orbit calibration [NOAA talks by B. Kress and A. Boudouridis on solar proton and radiation belt electron calibration]

CMA presentation on electron cross-calibration in GEO

Still have room for more presentations. If have idea for invited speaker or talks from organization, let us know.

Tim Hewison: it is up to the subgroup chairs to forward the invitations to the people they wish to attend

Standard Cross-Calibration Procedure

Last meeting, Piers Jiggens proposed standard method for cross calibration procedure to follow PRBEM Data Analysis Procedure

Ingmar Sandberg: at Athens COSPAR meeting, it was discussed that the procedure needs to be updated and extended. Our GSICS subgroup should discuss updates/extensions in Darmstadt.

Brian Kress: NCEI has reviewed the document. We differ on some details. We agree with the principle of adopting a standard. We can share our feedback before Darmstadt.

Nagatsuma: agree that needs to be discussed in Darmstadt. How important is the knowledge of the response function for cross calibration? Sandberg: needed to compare L0 – use response functions of target instrument to evaluate instruments, unfold responses.

Hewison: GSICS uses CGMS as channel to encourage agencies to provide the necessary data that is not already publicly available (L0, response functions, etc.). This is not a rapid process! Could take years.

Schedule a focused discussion in Darmstadt on the PRBEM standard and how to move forward, after hear feedback from speakers.

Next sub-group meeting

Can’t fix date today, need to wait for members who are not in attendance today

Objections to Feb 12-22 period? Feb 19 is a holiday in US. EUMETSAT holiday Feb 12. Japan holiday Feb 23. Otherwise, no objections.

AOB

New action item from Larry Flynn:

Please take a look at https://gsics.wmo.int/en/focal-points and consider who should be added to the list for the SW subgroup. The usual approach is for each agency to request the addition of their most active member as a focal point.

[Note, Piers is already listed for ESA but not identified as SW.]

Attendees

CMA: Cong Huang

EUMETSAT: Andrew Monham, Tim Hewison

KMA: Daehyeon Oh

NICT: Tsutomu Nagatsuma (Chair)

NOAA: Juan Rodriguez (Note taking), Brian Kress, Athanasios Boudouridis, Manik Bali

ROSHYDROMET: Kirill Kholdkov

SPARC: Ingmar Sandberg
