Microwave Sub-Group Meeting 2023-12-18

Meeting Objective

The meeting will be used to communicate to, and receive feedback from, the full membership regarding the new MW Subgroup objectives and strategic plan.

Meeting Contents

• Communicate New GSICS MW Subgroup Objective (see presentation 20231218_GSICS_MWSG_StrategicPlanSlide.pptx)
• Foundational Elements of MW Subgroup Path Forward
• Identification of MW Sensor Performance Assessment and Inter-Sensor Calibration Methods
• Develop and/or Adopt a Common Framework to Evaluate the MW Performance Assessment and Inter-sensor Calibration Methods.
• MW remote sensing glossary
• Uncertainty tree
• Creation of Focus Groups
• Small groups focused on a single work item
• Have identified dedicated point(s) of contact that can lead each group
• Present progress at meetings that include the entire MW Subgroup membership – on a quarterly basis
• MW Subgroup Meetings and Workshops

Focus Groups

We explained the concept of the sub-group and focus groups as agreed previously

• We introduced the topics and ask people to sign-up to support different topics (max 5)
• We will keep the poll open until mid-January – with occasional reminders
• We then sort the sign-ups into focus groups
  • and nominate a coordinator for each focus group
• We ask the coordinators to set up regular meetings of their focus groups and report at quarterly and annual meetings

During the meeting we:

• Decided to keep the survey on topics open for a period of 1 month

• Decided to hold a Technical Workshop - targetting February - otherwise after the annual meeting
• Reviewed mailing list used by Microwave Sub-Group - currently managed by Siena Iacovazzi
• Identified candidates for the basis of a glossary of vocabulary and terminology:

  • Sharing information, methods and data
  • Collaborative documentation
  • Sharing work plans to coordinate complementary workplans

Actions:

• Siena Iacovazzi to solicit point of contacts for each GSICS member agency and consider establishment of a mailing list using Google groups by 2024-01-18
• Siena Iacovazzi to set up follow-up adminstrative meeting in January to propose focus groups members by 2024-01-18
• Siena Iacovazzi to send a call for Technical Meeting with Doodle poll for dates by 2023-12-21
• Tim Hewison to draft email for survey of topics for Focus Groups by 2023-12-21
