Summary
Dohyeong lead the debriefing of GSICS-EP-19 and assigned actions and recommendations held in Bangalore, India, 1-2 June 2018.
Masaya summarized about GDWG report including GDWG chairing, action ID format, GSICS Wiki migration and new WMO GSICS portal website, instrument event logging, annual state of the observing system. Masaya reported on the State of the observing system and showed examples prepared by EUMETSAT, JMA, KMA and NOAA.
Masaya mentioned that there was no concrete decision and clear guidance from EP for the GSICS observing system report during the discussion in GSICS-EP-19. There was some discussion on the importance on summarized scene dependent bias or time series, on the dark ocean, clear vegetation, with/without cloud and so on. Tim mentions that GSICS monitoring results need detail information on scene dependent bias. For the more discussion on whether this was needed for GSICS Report a separate web meeting was also suggested if needed, or will discuss the topic in the next annual meeting. Meanwhile,
Action A.GWG.201807017.1: M. Takahashi (JMA) to follow up question of content of GSICS State of the Observing System Reports by email by October and follow-up with a web meeting if necessary.
There was also a discussion about the endorsement of GDWG chairing. Although Pete’s tenure as GDWG co-chair is now over, he continues in his role as outgoing vice chair. Also, there was no clear decision from EP about the nomination of the new vice chair.
Dohyeong introduced information for performance monitoring using the information from each agency’s provisional status of monitoring system, i.e. CMA, EUMETSAT, ISRO, JMA, KMA, NOAA, and summary of information included basic calibration coefficients, radiometric and geometric calibration, and vicarious calibration coefficients. GDWG also provided two inputs: implementing user notification function, and linking calibration event logging information. Dohyeong also reported the suggested criteria and procedures as GSICS references for VIS/NIR, IR, MW instruments approved by EP members.
Toshiyuki reported a status on a newly established OSCAR/Space database maintenance scheme approved in CGMS-45 in collaboration with CGMS Members and Observers. And he provided information to the group on an expected contribution of GSICS to WMO documents on satellite observation, the updates for “Guide to WIGOS” including the link to GSICS document. He also expected GRWG to review and update “Chapter 6: Calibration and validation” for emphasizing a possible contribution of GSICS to space-based observation.
Dohyeong introduced one KMA action of the analysis of the impact of the reprocessed
CrIS, such as by investigating the double differences of COMS/MI and
CrIS before/after reprocessing. As NOAA has reprocessed
CrIS, SDRs and EUMETSAT has completed the reprocessing IASI data, the analysis of the impact of the reprocessed
CrIS will be very useful information to GSICS members.
Dohyeong introduced the inter-calibration results between Himawari-8/SEDA and GOES 15 particle detector provided by NICT. And he also reported two more information: The SWTT presented Terms of Reference for a SWCG to CGMS plenary, and CGMS WG II members to provide the point of contacts for space weather instrument inter-calibration while there is no discussion on space weather topic during the GSICS-EP-19.
Manik presented GCC activities, and summary of actions. One GPPA discussion is the relaxation of the requirement for a User Guide for classical GSICS products, relaxing the requirement for Uncertainty analysis, so now only a Type A uncertainty analysis is required for products in the same family. This will be started with KMA and JMA. Dohyeong introduced the remaining actions assigned by GSICS-EP-19.
Tim led the topic of WGCV-GSICS interactions, which will be discussed at the WGCV plenary meeting on 29 August 2018.
Outcome
A.GWG.201807017.1: M. Takahashi (JMA) to follow up question of content of GSICS State of the Observing System Reports by email by October and follow-up with a web meeting if necessary.
