GDWG Webmeeting

Agenda: The GSICS Inter-Calibration products are currently being distributed via the GSICS Product Catalog. The calibration products have calibration coefficients that can be applied to bring the satellite L1 measurements traceable to reference satellites.

One of the key agendas is to understand if these can be integrated into the WMO WIS System, a system that is expected to replace the existing GTS system of data desssimination.

1. Introduction to WMO WIS System: Simon Elliot

Simon gave an overview of the WIS system. The WMO Information System 2.0 (WIS 2.0) is the framework for WMO data sharing in the 21st century for all WMO domains and disciplines.

It is envisaged to replace the existing GTS system. Simon provided an overview of the Background, Architecture and

Schedule of the WIS system.

The WIS architecture comprises of suppliers Global broker, Global cache and the consumers. The time line of the WIS 2.0 implementation is

Key Questions from GSICS Standpoint included

1. How can we include GSICS Products in the WIS System?

The inclusion of GSICS products in WIS system means that they are discoverable in the WIS system. To be able to do so we have to send an email to

wis2-support@wmo.int

Q and A

Kamaljit: The EP wanted to know if non core data can be made. How can it be useful to GSICS Data.

Simon: It also works for recommended data. Which is non core data. It would be possible to have access controls locally.

For recommended data one does not need to be recommended by anyone. Just a email saying data is available.

Nitant: GSICS products are cal products. Size is very small. GSICS products are not real time

Simon: If the data is being sent is small it can go in the message itself. No need to get a file . Timeliness is not a problem. WIS 2.0

Nitant: If we reprocess data then how does WIS 2 handle

Simon: Inform the Broker about the update

Heikki: What should be core and what not core is still to be decided

Masaya: WIS 2.0 is there any role of data archiving the past data for global cache. . Can we rmove old data.

Simon: Global Cache would retain data for a period of time. The minimum is 24 hrs. Though not yet fixed as yet. It is a rolling buffer.

Masaya:Is it possible to update product content without changing filenames . For instance RAC file

Simon: Yes that is possible. We assign a unique name.

Masaya: Are there any procedures to stop data sharing.

Simon: Any WIS center GSIC can take a call on this.

Simon: Hassan Haddouch

Heikki: https://community.wmo.int/en/activity-areas/wis

Simon: GSICS product as one

Kamaljit: Proceed as GSICS product.

A.GDWG.20230904.1: GDWG to contact the product producers to learn about their views on making their products discoverable in the WIS system on a test basis

A.GDWG.20230904.2: GDWG so share lessons learnt with GRWG, Simon and the WIS team.

2. GSICS Products: Manik Bali

3. Inter-Calibration tool: Paolo Castracane

Paolo gave an overview of the EVDC Validation tool developed at ESA. This tool available at https://evdc.esa.int can be used to determine the Overpass times of satellites.

  • EVDC aims to be the main European source of access to the correlative data for validation of atmospheric composition products from satellite platforms.
  • The EVDC portal offers several tools supporting the user in terms of Cal/Val data query, data upload/download, format conversion (GEOMS conversion routines) and for production of ECMWF parameter’s maps. The EVDC platform also provides an access to satellite data for specific missions, in particular the system supports new atmospheric composition/dynamic missions namely: Sentinel-5P, Aeolus and EarthCARE in the next future.
  • The portal can be easily expanded to support new campaigns and satellite missions. Data exchange with the EVDC is regulated by a protocol with the aim to ensure data ownership, to prevent re-distribution to third parties and to protect intellectual properties
Important links on learning how to use EVDC can be found 4. Recent developments in CMA . Tian Lin

Tian gave a good overview of the CMA GSICS activities. Covered the following topics
  • Introduced to RICH-CEOS
  • Linked this website to CMA-GPRC
  • Consists of 30 Years of basic climate data. . One can accces data on the RICH CEOS data by registering on the website
  • NSMC-GPRC website has been updated.
  • Recent meeting information.
  • FY-3E orbit prediction results
  • FY-4A inter-calibration results
